When you suffer from an irritable skin condition, such as eczema or psoriasis, finding the right clothes to wear can be a difficult task. This is because many clothes are made with fabrics that can further aggravate symptoms or simply be downright uncomfortable!

Fortunately, there’s a natural fabric called TENCEL that not only helps reduce flare-ups but also boosts the healing process. Read on to discover the best clothing for psoriasis sufferers that will help improve your skin and quality of life.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition caused by an overactive immune system. This leads to an extra build-up of skin cells which, in turn, gives psoriasis its characteristic appearance of red, crusty patches covered with silvery scales. While these patches can appear anywhere on the body, they typically develop on the elbows, scalp, knees, and lower back.

Psoriasis affects as many as 125 million people worldwide. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, with many people going through periodic flares. Like with eczema, symptoms can be triggered by extreme weather conditions, food sensitivities, stress, and even alcohol.

Why Clothing Matters

As your body’s largest organ, you want to make sure you give your skin the care and attention it deserves. Because clothing comes into direct contact with your skin, it’s important to consider the fabrics and chemicals used to make your clothing.

Common fabrics known to cause a rash or ignite a negative reaction include nylon, rayon, spandex, rubber, wool, polyester, and latex. Wearing psoriasis-friendly clothing can help prevent irritation, reduce inflammation, and potentially even boost the healing process.

Dry Wrap Therapy

Dry wrapping is an easy at-home treatment that provides immediate, short-term relief for psoriasis. It involves applying a natural emollient to the skin then applying a layer of fabric or clothes over the problem area. To help relieve itchy, irritated psoriasis, we recommend wearing the garment overnight or for a minimum of two hours. Be sure to apply another layer of cream upon removal.

Wet Wrap Therapy

Wet wrap therapy is a bit more intense than dry wrap therapy – with intense results to match! It consists of layering a natural eczema cream with a wet layer and a dry layer to help the natural emollient permeate the skin. Again, make sure to leave the clothing on for a minimum of two hours or even overnight. When it’s time to remove, be sure to reapply a moisturizer.

Wet wrap therapy is an excellent treatment for psoriasis as it soothes flare-ups and helps prevent further irritation. For optimal results, repeat the whole process 2-3 times per day for a few days. For more severe cases, repeat the process as necessary.

For both dry and wet wrap therapy, we recommend these hypoallergenic sleeves. Made from all-natural fibers, they allow emollients to safely permeate the skin. Suitable for all ages - from babies to adults - they are made with sensitive skin in mind.
