What is Back Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Back seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition. It can look similar to eczema or psoriasis. While it usually appears on the scalp, it can also develop in other places on the body such as the brows, ears, mid-chest, and mid-back.

Like eczema, it is not contagious. It usually affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60 years old. People who suffer from seborrheic dermatitis will likely go through varying periods of remissions and flare-ups.

Symptoms of Back Seborrheic Dermatitis

You’ll notice that seborrheic dermatitis tends to occur where the skin is oilier. It's characterized by dryness and redness, as well as greasy white or yellow scales. This rash is typically itchy and uncomfortable.

In some cases, you may even notice oozing or weeping skin. Like mentioned earlier, symptoms may come and go with varying degrees of intensity.

Causes of Back Seborrheic Dermatitis

Unfortunately, doctors aren’t sure exactly what causes back seborrheic dermatitis but it may be linked to an irregular response of the immune system.

There are a number of different triggers that can cause this condition. Some of the top triggers include stress, cold and dry weather conditions, and pre-existing medical conditions. Some of these medical conditions include psoriasis, HIV, acne, rosacea, Parkinson's disease, alcoholism, and depression.

Those who have recovered from a stroke or heart attack are also more at risk for developing back seborrheic dermatitis.
